Each team designates a limited number of scoring swimmers, usually 15. You also have a limited number of divers that score. There is a lot of strategy involved in team selection. Most conferences limit events to 3 individual and 4 relay or 4 individual and 3 relay (it differs, I think the ACC might limit to 3 events). You want to max points, so you want somebody that can A final in three events then contribute to relays.

Todd DeSorbo has done an amazing job at Uva. Their women are going to dominate for years. They seem to be moving in that direction with the men, but Sergio Lopez is doing an amazing job with the VT men and getting momentum with the women. Sergio is doing as well or better than any coach at VT right now, and he's soon going to have a top 5 men's team. A couple recruits can get the women in the top 10.
